Latics returned to the top of the Football League Youth Alliance on Friday afternoon after a late Callum Lang goal secured a crucial 1-0 victory away at Accrington Stanley, moving Latics onto 56 points from 25 games.
Will Ryder's side leaped back above fellow title chasers Bury, but with the Shakers grabbing a 3-2 win against Walsall on Saturday, they'll head into Tuesday's crunch match between the two sides at Robin Park second by one point, but still with a game in hand.
In a close game, Lang and Shane Donaghey provided the inspiration for victory six minutes from time, with the midfielder's diagonal pass from right to left finding Lang in the left side of the area, the forward taking the ball down on his thigh before finishing into the bottom left corner.
Latics: Evans, Plant, Lingard, Donaghey, Baxendale, Stubbs, Lang, Barrigan, Sang (Taylor 83), Burgess, White (Gregory 68)
