Football League Division Three
Promotion hopes were riding high at the turn of the year, with Latics fourth at the start of the day having won their last three consecutive matches, arriving at Belle Vue unbeaten in six.
Ray Mathias' Latics went on to extend their fine form, but it wasn't without incident in this seven-goal thriller against Doncaster Rovers, who sat 23rd in Division Three and would eventually go on to be relegated.
David Thompson gave Latics an early lead before Steve Burke was dismissed for an off the ball incident, but it gave the hosts a spark, scoring three times without a response as Ken Brannigan, Paul Raven and Tony Kinsella all hit the target.
Latics rallied though, powering through thanks to Andy Ainscow and Paul Jewell who pulled the visitors level. The drama continued into the final stages, and with the ball bouncing in the box and penalty claims being shouted, Paul Cook followed the ball in to secure Latics' fourth straight victory in a run which would stretch to seven games, and 11 unbeaten.
Unfortunately for Latics their form dipped dramatically in the final two months of the season, winning just three of their final 15 matches, dropping from a promising fourth spot down to seventh.
Latics team that day was - Hughes, Atherton, Kennedy, Hamilton, McEwan, Holden (Beesley), D.Thompson, Pilling, Ainscow, Jewell, Cook
