Wigan Athletic 4 Southend United 1
20 October 1990
Football League Division Three
Latics entered the clash with joint Division Three leaders Southend United on a healthy run in mid-table, until Don Page, Phil Daley and Bryan Griffiths (2) inspired a push up to ninth place and a fifth straight unbeaten home game, a pattern which would extend to six against Preston North End shortly after.
Page gave Latics an early lead when he turned the ball in at the left post from a deep corner, before Daley doubled the lead inside the opening 15 minutes, controlling a fierce cross from the right by Griffiths before turning the ball home.
Peter Cawley pulled the Shrimpers to within touching distance of an equaliser just after the break with a header from a free kick, but two quick-fire Griffiths goals would soon put the contest to bed.
A foul on Page, which sparked a penalty box scuffle, allowed the consistent Griffiths to convert from the spot in the 68th minute, before grabbing his second three minutes later, picking up the scraps of a scramble in the area, another finish with conviction from the forward.
