Wigan Whites to represent Latics in North West Walking Football tournament.
Wigan Whites, a team of Walking Footballers aged 50+, will represent Wigan Athletic at the Football League Trust’s North West Walking Football tournament after winning Latics’ heats of the competition on Wednesday.
Thirty players took part in the 5-a-side competition at the Powerleague Soccerdome, which Wigan Athletic Community Trust ran in partnership with Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles.
The Wigan Whites team will now represent Latics in Blackpool next month, taking on teams from seven other North West professional football clubs at the next round of the competition.
Mike Moore, 67, who played in the tournament, said: “It’s not so much the competitiveness of events like this that attracts me, it’s that it’s a fun way to keep fit and the people are all really sociable. Even when you make a pig’s ear of something, say you miss an open goal, everyone sees the positive instead, like saying ‘well done for getting into that position’.
“Coming back to play football after thirty, forty years is brilliant. It’s hard work the first few times and you can’t believe how bad you are, but after a while you get yourself back used to playing and find yourself getting better each week.”
Wigan Athletic Community Trust provide Walking Football sessions for ex-armed forces servicemen at Wigan Youth Zone every week through their Football 4 Forces programme, on Wednesdays from 1.00 – 3.00pm.
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles run several Walking Football sessions throughout the week, find out more here.
