Wigan Athletic named as one of ‘Top 10 Family Friendly Clubs’ outside of the Premier League.

The Guardian have named Wigan Athletic as one of the Top 10 Family Friendly Football Clubs outside of the Premier League, being highlighted for their ‘superb entertainment for families’.

Wigan Athletic’s inclusion in the list comes following the club receiving the Football League’s Family Excellence Award for the first time.

The Guardian article said:

“In achieving the award for the first time, the club has been recognised for its superb entertainment for families, engaging with young fans and families through such initiatives as the free Family Fun Zone, which includes a climbing wall and football and tennis activities with Wigan Athletic Community Trust.”

The free Wigan Athletic Family Zone was noted as a great initiative and this season the indoor [Family Zone has been reopened] with new and improved additions, including foosball, air hockey and a drawing and colouring-in area!

Another aspect that was highlighted in the article was the cost of match tickets for junior supporters and families – with adult tickets from just £20, children from £2; adult season tickets from £179 and under-16s free when purchasing an adult season tickets.

Wigan Athletic Community Trust head up operations in the Family Zone, and Head of Community Trust, Tom Flower said:

“It was great that Wigan Athletic was recognised in the EFL Family Excellence Awards for the Family Zone last season and Community Trust staff will now be running the Family Fun Zone under the East Stand before each weekend home game.

“We’ve listened to some of the feedback from the inspectors and taken on board some of their comments including improved signage and we’ve also added some extras to the Zone such as free tea and coffee for adults and free fruit for kids so this season promises to be even better.”
