Jordi Gomez has signed back for Wigan Athletic, two years after departing the club.
Gomez underwent a medical late yesterday and this morning put pen to paper on a year-long contract at the DW Stadium.
The 31-year-old Spaniard will join up with the rest of the squad in the build up to Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
No one knows Gomez better than his former team mate Gary Caldwell and he is delighted to have finally netted his man.
“There have been rumours about this one all summer,” he said, “and we have had to work really hard to get him here within our budget.
“Football-wise, we all know what Jordi can do, and at 31 he is still at the peak of his abilities. His quality on the ball is second to none and he will be able to pass on his knowledge and experience on and off the fields to help the younger members of the squad. He adds great competition to the squad and we are delighted to have got him.”
Gomez left for Sunderland in 2014 when his contract expired, after he won the Player of the Year award. He first joined the club in 2009 from Espanyol and enjoyed five great seasons at the DW, including of course winning the FA Cup and playing in the Europa League. In that spell he scored 28 goals in 162 appearances.
