LOAN REPORT: DEBUTS FOR WHITEHEAD, ODELUSI AND MCKAY

8 August 2016

Latics trio make debuts in EFL season openers.

  • Danny Whitehead, Sanmi Odelusi and Billy Mckay all involved in loan action.
  • Cheltenham Town make EFL return with 1-1 home draw as Whitehead featured for full 90.
  • Mckay played full 90 for Oldham Athletic, Odelusi a late substitute for Rochdale.

Wigan Athletic's loan players all made their first competitive appearances this weekend, with Danny Whitehead (Cheltenham Town), Sanmi Odelusi (Rochdale) and Billy Mckay (Oldham Athletic) all involved in the opening weekend of the 2016/17 EFL season.

CHELTENHAM TOWN 1 LEYTON ORIENT 1 - DANNY WHITEHEAD

Midfielder Danny Whitehead featured for the full 90 minutes as 2015/16 National League champions Cheltenham Town made their immediate return to the EFL after just one season in the top tier of non-league football.

The 22-year-old featured for the full 90 minutes and was Latics' most successful loanee of the weekend, as Billy Waters helped to earn an opening day point for Whitehead's new side.

Cheltenham currently sit 12th in Sky Bet League Two following the draw against Leyton Orient.

MILLWALL 3 OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0 - BILLY MCKAY

It was a tough afternoon for Steve Robinson's Oldham Athletic side as the former Northern Ireland international took charge of his first competitive game, with Billy Mckay and his team mates on the wrong end of a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Millwall.

Mckay featured for the full 90 minutes, but couldn't help Oldham from slipping to a heavy opening day defeat and the unenviable 24th spot in Sky Bet League One.

ROCHDALE 2 PETERBOROUGH UNITED 3 - SANMI ODELUSI

Continuing the action in League One, Sanmi Odelusi's Rochdale suffered a similarly cruel defeat to Latics' first team at Bristol City, with his new side losing 3-2 in the closing stages of their season opener at home to Peterborough United.

The forward featured as an 87th minute substitute at Spotland, only to see Gwion Edwards grabbing the headlines two minutes later to hand the Posh all three points, leaving Dale in 16th place.
