The 23-year-old has undergone a medical this afternoon, although he is not eligible for tonight’s Sky Bet Championship match at home to Birmingham City.
Harrogate-born Garbutt spent last season on loan at Fulham, making 25 appearances in the league, having made five appearances for The Toffees in the Barclays Premier League.
Latics manager Gary Caldwell said:
“We’ve been hit with injuries to Reece James and Andy Kellett and it was clear we needed someone in. Luke is a tremendous young player with a big future in the game and we are delighted to have reached an agreement to bring him here.
“He knows the division well having spent last season on loan with Fulham and he adds excellent competition to the squad. He has great energy, and is a dynamic defender who is comfortable as a wing back or as part of a flat back four.”
Garbutt was initially at Leeds United before joining’s Everton Academy in 2009 at the age of 16 and turning professional at the age of 18. He also made 53 appearances for Colchester United in two loan spells, playing alongside Alex Gilbey. He made his debut for Everton in a Barclays Premier League match at Southampton in April 2014.
