  • ‘He’s one we’ve been after for a long time’ - Gary Caldwell on Nathan Byrne.
Nathan Byrne has signed back for Wigan Athletic from Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old underwent a medical today and has put pen to paper on a three year contract at the DW Stadium.

Byrne operates mainly as a right wing-back, although he can also play as an orthodox right-sided midfielder or right back and manager Gary Caldwell welcomed him to the club.

“We have been tracking Nathan for a long time and we tried to sign him last season before he went to Wolves.” he said.

“When we found he was available now, we worked hard to make it happen. He’s exactly the sort of player we want at the club, young, dynamic, ambitious and he will fit in very well here. He is something we haven’t really got in the squad, and adds to an area where we have struggled recently with injuries and needed strengthening. Our fans will like him, he has pace, intelligence and strength.”

Byrne began his career as a Tottenham trainee before making his debut with Brentford on loan and also enjoyed spells on loan at AFC Bournemouth, Crawley Town and Swindon Town, the latter eventually being turned into a permanent move.

He spent two seasons at The County Ground, notching nearly 100 appearances in all competitions before becoming a Wolves player this time last year. He appeared 24 times for them last season, scoring twice, but has not made any appearances this season to date.
