Latics ended a run of three straight defeats in the EFL Youth Alliance with a 0-0 draw in the Youth Alliance Cup, a welcome result for Nick Chadwick's side at Tranmere Rovers, but one which came close to being even better through late Chris Sang opportunities.
The group stage of the competition kicked off with a point for the Under 18s, who sit third behind Fleetwood Town and Oldham Athletic.
Latics played well throughout and made a marked improvement on recent performances, but couldn't find the crucial goal to make a statement in their group.
The hosts stepped up in the second half for a spell, but spurned their best opportunity from a throw in down the right hand side, a sitter by all accounts.
Latics mustered the best two chances in the closing stages though, breaking away on the counter attack, but only coming agonisingly close through striker Sang.
Attentions turn back to the league this coming Saturday, with a trip to Rochdale, the scene of last season's Youth Alliance title win.
