Latics follow up FA Youth Cup win with 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Youth Alliance.
- Wigan Athletic U18 1 – 0 Tranmere Rovers U18.
- Mwiya Malumo scores the only goal of the game.
- Nick Chadwick’s side remain 8th in the EFL Youth Alliance.
Wigan Athletic’s under-18 side were thankful to a Mwiya Malumo goal as they edged out Tranmere Rovers 1-0 in their final game before Christmas at Robin Park on Saturday morning.
In their last game before Christmas, Latics made a good response following their long trip back from Exeter City, where they were victorious in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday, and a number of players not involved at St. James’ Park impressed, including Malumo.
On a foggy morning, the statistics suggested Latics dominated proceedings and found themselves seeing more of the ball and making more entries into the final third than their opposition.
Tranmere did make it difficult at times with their two banks of four but Latics’ patience in possession paid off with the majority of the chances Nick Chadwick’s side created coming from long period of possession which involved every player in the team.
The goal itself came from a mistake by Tranmere’s Devine, who passed across his box looking for his goalkeeper only to see Malumo react quickly to intercept and finish left-footed for his fourth goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Jordan Perrin had to make a good save from a free-kick with the last effort of the game but, barring a couple of early saves too, he was relatively untroubled in a good win for the team.
On a positive note, Luke Burgess and Liam Rhoden returned as second-half substitutes following their respective injuries.
Latics: Perrin, Plant, Taylor, Hilton, Forecast, Cotter, Donaghey, Lang, Powell (Rhoden 84), Malumo (Berry 88), White (Burgess 77).
Subs not used: Downey, Randell.
