The pupils at Woodfield Primary School run the Daily Mile each day
Over 50 young children from Woodfield Primary School took part in the ‘12k’s of Christmas’ campaign with Wigan Athletic’s youth team players on Tuesday morning.
Head of Academy Gregor Rioch and Under 18’s coach Nick Chadwick brought the young Latics to Woodfield to meet the pupils, who take part in the Daily Mile each day.
Woodfield Primary School’s ‘12k’s of Christmas’ is an event which sees the children run 1k each day in the lead up to Christmas, with treats of mince pies, hot chocolate and milk for all pupils.
The Daily Mile aims to improve the physical, emotional, social health and wellbeing of young children – regardless of age or personal circumstances. The impact can be transformational as it improves fitness, concentration levels, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.
Julie Charnley, Head Teacher at Woodfield, said: “It’s hugely inspirational for the pupils to meet Wigan Athletic’s young players. We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of the club since June 2016 when Mr David Whelan very kindly donated some funds to help us initiate the Daily Mile.
She added: “The pupils, parents, teachers and governors of the school have been fully supportive of the Daily Mile and it’s gone from strength to strength. Having Wigan Athletic involved as well just helps us and encourages us along the way. We’re so grateful to them.”
Tom Hilton, a member of Wigan Athletic’s youth team, said: “Taking part in the Daily Mile and meeting the pupils of Woodfield was brilliant. The event is such a fantastic idea and it was great to be able to give something back to the local community.”
