Success for basketballers plus new badminton league.

Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Premier League 4 Sport programme has kicked off 2016 with lots of success in the several sports they provide for 12 – 19 year olds.

Premier League 4 Sport is a national sports programme backed by the Premier League and Sport England and provided by football clubs across the country, offering opportunities to get involved with a number of sports; Wigan Athletic Community Trust run sessions in athletics, badminton, basketball, hockey, netball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

Zac Taylor, Premier League 4 Sport Co-Ordinator, said: “2016 has seen us continue the success of previous years, working with over 1000 young people in just 4 months and again running 25 sessions across eight sports in venues across the Wigan Borough.

“So far this year we have hosted and attended several competitions including Table Tennis, Glow Tennis, Netball and Basketball. 

“A particular highlight this year has been working with Badminton England and the Wigan Badminton Development Group to set up the Wigan Athletic Community Trust Junior Badminton League, that allows participants of Premier League 4 Sport the opportunity to take part in first level competition.”

Badminton

The Community Trust is sponsoring a brand new badminton league that has been set up for players who take part in the Trust’s Premier League 4 Sport badminton sessions.

The league will allow players from the programme to play in Under 14s and Under 16s games against one another at Wigan Youth Zone throughout the year.

Premier League 4 Sport badminton sessions currently take place at the following times and locations:

Abraham Guest Academy, Greenhey, Orrell, Wigan, WN5 0DJ – Saturday 2.00pm – 4.00pm
B4BC Badminton Club, Westleigh High School, Westleigh Lane, Leigh, WN7 5NL – Friday 6.00pm – 7.00pm
Golborne High School, Lowton Road, Golborne, WA3 3EL – Monday 3.30pm – 4.30pm & Tuesday 3.30pm – 4.30pm (Female only)
Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan, WN1 1RU – Wednesday 7.00pm – 8.00pm

Basketball



Basketballers from Premier League 4 Sport sessions at Wigan Youth Zone represented Wigan Athletic and won a North West tournament in Manchester last month, beating a team from Manchester United in the final of the 3v3 competition.

The teams got to watch Manchester Giants game against Sheffield Sharks following the competition, seeing the professional basketballers in action.

More players from Wigan Youth Zone represented Latics in a friendly fixture against Manchester United at Salford College last week, winning and losing one game each.

Golborne High School, Lowton Road, Golborne, WA3 3EL – Wednesday 3.30pm – 4.30pm
Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan, WN1 1RU – Monday 7.00pm – 8.00pm




Netball

Girls representing Wigan Athletic finished as runners up at a netball competition hosted by Liverpool Foundation last month, after a tense final between them and West Brom.

Latics team beat players from Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United, Manchester City and Manchester United in the group stages to make it through to the final.

As well as taking on teams from around the North West, England Netball player Pam Cookey was at the tournament to give the girls a warm up ahead of the competition!

Leigh Sports Village, Sale Way, Leigh, Lancashire, WN7 4JY - Monday 8.30pm – 9.30pm
Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan, WN1 1RU - Thursday 5.00pm – 6.00pm
