DW STADIUM RELAID IN RECORD TIME

12 February 2016

Weather kind as DW Stadium surface re-turfed in record time.

  • DW Stadium pitch resurfacing work complete after clement weather.
  • Contractors have worked day and night to complete work.
  • Latics play Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League One on Saturday 13 February.
The DW Stadium ground-staff and turf contractors Talbots have worked around the clock this week in order to get a new playing surface relaid in record time, in readiness for tomorrow’s Sky Bet League One match versus Oldham Athletic.

Following consistently wet weather, the weather this week has been dry and clear, enabling resurfacing work to be completed in time and Jonathan Jackson, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, said:

“Ideally, Head Groundsman Ian Forshaw and our sports turf consultants would need more time than a week to prepare a new playing surface, but our thanks go to them for the work they have put in this week. It has been a marvellous effort.

“The pitch has deteriorated significantly since November but we were anticipating that it would be robust enough to last until the end of the season. A number of other Premier League and Football League clubs have also relaid new pitches in the past month and so this is not a unique situation.

“There have been a number of issues that have contributed to the playing surface becoming unstable and suffering from significant grass loss. Further significant work is planned at the end of the football season to improve the playing surface for next season.”
