Latics winger joins in with Community Trust PE lesson.
Six and seven-year-old students at St Marie’s Primary School, Standish, were treated to a surprise visit from Latics winger Yanic Wildschut earlier this week in their PE lesson with the Wigan Athletic Community Trust coaches.
Yanic joined in with the classes PE lesson, playing a game of football tag and helping the young pupils to practice their passing skills.
With a hall full of Wigan Athletic fans, lots of hands shot up during question and answer time with Yanic, and the question of the day had to be – ‘can you sing your song for us?’ – Yanic was only too happy to oblige!
Yanic said: “I’ve heard my song quite a lot lately and it is very catchy so when they asked me to sing I gave it my best – hopefully it’s something they’ll remember and be singing for quite a while!
“It was really nice joining in with the PE lessons, it brought back a lot of memories from when I was in school playing all similar types of games to those we played today.
“They really got me involved with the lesson, it was a lot harder than I expected but everybody was laughing and enjoying themselves so that’s the most important thing.
“Even at their age, the kids are looking up to Wigan Athletic and the players, so it’s good for us to give something back to the community and to come and visit the schools that the Community Trust work in.”
The Community Trust provide 140 coaching sessions in 26 primary schools across Wigan every week through their Schools Sports programme, offering high quality PE lessons and lesson support to teachers, with support from the Premier League.
