  • Don Cowie contract terminated by mutual consent.
  • 32-year-old leaves the club after 18 month at Wigan Athletic.
  • “Don is a fantastic professional and we wish him all the best” – Gary Caldwell.
Wigan Athletic can confirm that Scotland international midfielder Don Cowie has had his contract terminated by mutual consent and has now left the club.

Latics manager Gary Caldwell said:  “Don is a player I have a massive amount of respect for, I have known him a long time as a team mate for Scotland and here at Wigan and now this season as his manager.

“He is a fantastic professional and has never given less than 100% every time he puts on a match kit or a training top. The reality, however, is that he has not been getting as much football as he would have wished at this stage of his career  and when the opportunity came up, he was happy with the situation and will now be able to explore what options he has.

“We wish him well, we hope he finds a club quickly because I have no doubt he has a lot to offer still.”

The 32-year-old, who turns 33 next month, arrived in the summer of 2014 after his contract expired at Cardiff City and last played for Latics as a substitute in the match versus Sheffield United earlier this month. In total he made 37 league appearances, 11 as a substitute, plus three other appearances in cups.
