Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that former England Under 20 defender Reece Wabara has joined the club on a short term deal until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old former Manchester City youth player, who played one first team game during his time at the Etihad Stadium, was available after his contract at Barnsley expired this week and the club have moved quickly to secure his signature.

He has twice played against Latics this season, in the game at the DW Stadium in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Semi Final and in the league match a fortnight later at Oakwell, and Latics manager Gary Caldwell has witnessed his talent first hand.

He said: “With Donald Love recalled to Manchester United and Kevin McNaughtion still unable to join the squad full-time yet, we needed someone who can operate on the right side of defence and we are delighted Reece can come on board.

“He is an experienced defender at this level, is quick and dynamic and can play the wing-back role or as part of a flat four.”

Wabara gained league experience at Ipswich Town, Oldham Athletic, Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers whilst still at City, before joining Rovers permanently. He moved to Oakwell at the beginning of this season on a short term deal.
