Mab’s Cross win Wigan Athletic heats of the 2016 Football League Kids Cup with Golden Goal.
Forty Wigan schools sent 6-a-side teams of 9-11 year olds to compete in the tournament at the Powerleague Soccerdome, and the final game between Mab’s Cross Primary School and St Oswald’s Primary School went all the way to a Golden Goal, after the game finished 5-5 in normal time.
David Sharpe and Gary Caldwell watched the exciting final, picking up on several players to recommend to Wigan Athletic’s Academy, and presented the winners with their trophy.
David Sharpe said: “It’s been a good experience seeing all of the kids playing football and having fun; It’s one thing I didn’t do enough of as a kid, I would rather watch than play, so it’s good to see them playing and I hope they carry on.
“I just had a word with one of the coaches and recommended some of the players to our Academy, so it’s great for me to be able to see these local lads that are good footballers and hopefully get them into our Academy, which is flourishing at the moment.
Gary Caldwell added: “The final got really tense especially when it came down to the Golden Goal, suddenly everyone was defending for their lives!
“I think it’s important that as a club we do run competitions like this within our community. Having forty schools from around Wigan come and join in is great for everyone involved.”
Mab’s Cross will now go on to represent Wigan Athletic in the Northern regional finals of the competition at Crewe Alexandra next month.
The Kids Cup is organised by the Football League, providing primary school students with chances to play competitive football while representing their football team.
