Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that Dutch winger Yanic Wildschut has joined Latics from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee.

After a fee was agreed between the two clubs late last week, the 24-year-old, whose three month loan spell at Latics came to an end following the Sky Bet League One game at Scunthorpe United on January 2, passed a medical at the DW Stadium and has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal until the summer of 2019.

He goes straight into the squad to face Sheffield United in Sky Bet League One at the DW Stadium on Tuesday 12th January.

“Everyone at the club has worked so hard to get the deal over the line and it shows our ambition that we are now able to unveil Yanic as a Wigan Athletic player,” said Gary Caldwell.

“On his day, he has already shown us what he can do and how devastating he can be. He’s not the finished article yet, he will be the first to admit that, but his potential is huge and we are delighted that it is here in Wigan that we can both work together for the long-term.”

After moving to Middlesbrough in September 2014 from Heerenveen, Wildschut came to Latics last October and to date has made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting on many others.

He said: “I have loved playing for Wigan, everyone at the club has been great to me, the fans sing my name, and I’m so happy that everything is now done. I can concentrate on playing now again and helping us climb the table.”

Wildschut’s professional career began at FC Zwolle in 2010 having progressed through the academy at Ajax. He went on to play 61 times for VVV Venlo between 2011 and 2013, scoring seven goals and joined Heerenveen in 2013, where he made 22 appearances in total, scoring twice. He also had a spell on loan at ADO Den Haag in 2014 before sealing his move to England.

YANIC WILDSCHUT’S FIRST INTERVIEW AS A PERMANENT WIGAN ATHLETIC PLAYER WILL FOLLOW ON THE OFFICIAL CLUB WEBSITE.
