A strong Wigan Athletic Development Squad played out a goalless draw with local neighbours Chorley at Victory Park on Wednesday evening.

Latics, whose starting eleven featured four players from the first team squad, had their chances to win the game, with Sam Cosgrove perhaps going closest early on in the second half.

However, Chorley had chances of their own, and put heavy pressure on Latics in the final 15 minutes, with Andrew Teague hitting the post for the hosts late on, and Peter Atherton's men had to dig in to ensure they kept honours even.

Latics brought a strong side up the A49 to Victory Park, with Tim Chow, Andrew Taylor, Craig Davies and Sanmi Odelusi all in the starting eleven for the game.

It was a close affair throughout, but the first team players were quick to catch the eye for Latics, with Andrew Taylor and Sanmi Odelusi causing Chorley plenty of problems in the early exchanges.

However, it was trialist Sam Williams who went closest for Latics in the first half, when he tested Sam Ashton with a low effort from the edge of the area.

It didn’t all go Latics’ way however, and they were fortunate not to concede a penalty six minutes before the interval, when Williams brought down Jason Walker in the area.

The referee waved play on, though, and Latics went into the interval level.

The game continued to be tight in the second period, but Latics almost got off to the perfect start through Sam Cosgrove, who had Latics’ best chance of the game on 48 minutes.

The forward picked up the ball after a good run forward by substitute Callum Lang, who replaced Davies before half time, and fired his effort just wide of Ashton’s goal after bursting into the area.

Chorley grew into the second half and took control towards the end of the game, having a host of chances to win the contest late on, with Sefton Gonzales, Marcus Carver and Dale Whitham all going close in the final 15 minutes.

The host’s best chance came with five minutes to go through substitute Andrew Teague, who rose well to meet a corner and saw his header strike Dan Lavercombe’s left post.

Latics dug in however, and were able to hold on to ensure they shared the spoils at Victory Park.
