WIGAN ATHLETIC SIGN DEFENDER JAKE BUXTON FROM DERBY COUNTY

26 July 2016

Latics sign experienced defender Jake Buxton on three-year-deal from Derby County.

  • Jake Buxton signs for Wigan Athletic on three-year deal.
  • 31-year-old leaves Derby County after seven years at the iPro Stadium.
  • Gary Caldwell: “Jake adds further Championship experience to our ranks.”
Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that defender Jake Buxton has completed his transfer to the DW Stadium from Derby County.

The 31-year-old has signed a three-year-contract with Latics and could well feature in this week’s pre-season friendlies with Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town after already featuring for Nigel Pearson’s Rams against Benfica earlier this month.

Buxton, who spent seven years at Derby, will add further Championship experience to Gary Caldwell’s squad ahead of the season’s opener at Bristol City in just under two weeks’ time and his new manager was delighted to secure his signature.

"Jake adds great experience and competition to our defence and I am delighted to be able to bring him here," Caldwell said.

"Not only will he be an asset to us on the field, but Jake will also add to the great character within our dressing room and I feel he will fit into our group perfectly.

"He’s a top professional with over 300 Football League games to his name and he’s chomping at the bit to add to his tally."

Buxton made just four appearances for the Rams last season, but prior to that he’d featured heavily for the club under managers Nigel Clough and Steve McClaren.

A Mansfield Town youth graduate, Buxton featured on over 150 occasions in the league for the Stags before joining Burton Albion – then managed by Clough - in their successful 2008-09 Conference winning title campaign.

Buxton followed Clough to Derby and, despite injuries restricting his progress in the first two seasons at the iPro Stadium, he went on to become an integral part of the Rams’ success, culminating in him playing 46 league games as McClaren’s side narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in the 2013-14 campaign.
