Learn more about new midfield man Alex Gilbey.

  • Alex Gilbey joins Wigan Athletic from Colchester United.
  • 21-year-old midfielder has played over 100 times for the U's.
  • Gilbey scored stunning goal against Latics in 3-3 draw.

1. Alex Gilbey was born on 9 December 1994 in Dagenham, growing up in Colchester.

2. Gilbey progressed through the Academy at Colchester United from the age of 12, remaining at the Essex-based club until joining Latics.

3. The midfielder made his professional debut on 9 October 2012 away to Northampton Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, making three first team appearances before joining Newport County on loan in March 2012 until the end of the season.

4. Gilbey helped Newport to promotion back to the Football League after a 25 year absence.  He made eight appearances in total, including all three play-off matches alongside former Latics midfielder Mike Flynn as the Welsh side went on to beat Wrexham 2-0 in the final.

5. 2013-14 proved to be Gilbey's breakthrough season as he made 39 appearances in total and was named Colchester's Young Player of the Year as the U's finished 16th in Sky Bet League One.

6. Gilbey scored his first professional goal on 25 March 2014 in a 4-2 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, a game in which Latics forward Michael Jacobs scored after just one minute for Wolves.  Former Latics striker Nouha Dicko also scored in the last minute.

7. 2014-15 was another big season for the midfielder, making 36 appearances with two more goals against Preston North End and Gosport Borough in the FA Cup.

8. Gilbey helped Colchester to a 19th placed finish in Sky Bet League One in 2014-15.

9. In 2015-16 Gilbey was named vice-captain and made 42 appearances, scoring five goals.  The midfielder also won the club's Player of the Year award, taking his Colchester tally up to 121 matches and eight goals.
