Latics complete signing of Colchester United Player of the Year.

  • Alex Gilbey joins Latics from Colchester United.
  • Midfielder arrives at DW Stadium on three-year-deal.
  • 21-year-old was named Colchester’s Player of the Year for 2015-16.
Wigan Athletic can officially confirm that midfielder Alex Gilbey has joined the club on a three-year-deal from Colchester United for an undisclosed compensation fee.

The 21-year-old arrives at the DW Stadium following an impressive personal season at the Weston Homes Community Stadium in which he scored five goals in 42 appearances and received Colchester’s 2015-16 Player of the Year award.

Gilbey featured twice against Latics in the club’s 2015-16 promotion winning campaign, scoring a stunning right footed drive in the 3-3 draw at Colchester.

After putting pen to paper and successfully completing a medical, Gilbey, who has over 100 appearances in the English Football League already, was welcomed to the club by manager Gary Caldwell:

“Alex was one of the outstanding young talents in League One last season, and we believe the next stage of his career can be fulfilled here.

“He’s exactly the sort of player and person who suits this club and we’re delighted to add him to the group for pre-season.

“He scored an excellent goal against us at Colchester last season and he was a standout player on the day, making him an excellent addition.”

Gilbey becomes the second player to join the club this summer after Stephen Warnock agreed to sign permanently from Derby County following his successful loan spell.
