Burn 'hooked' straight away by Latics.
- Dan Burn agrees to sign for Wigan Athletic.
- Defender discusses move from Fulham.
- 24-year-old excited by the optimism at Latics.
The 24-year-old defender, speaking at Latics’ new training facility in Euxton, said:
“I found out about the interest in March, but nothing really happened until I came and saw the manager and the chairman last week.
“It’s been a quick process from then, and with my contract running out at Fulham it was great to hear of the ambition of this club from the manager and chairman.
“I spoke to other teams, but when I came to Wigan I felt wanted and that’s what matters to me in football.
“Every time I speak to people here I get a good feeling about the club. I’ve played here before and I’ve always enjoyed playing here, so once I’d met with the manager and chairman I was sold on the decision straight away.”
With the previous interest in mind, Burn admitted he has been keeping an eye on Latics, and has admiration for what the club achieved last season as well as the increased publicity surrounding one of his new team mates.
“It’s a young, hungry squad and they’ve got plans for the future, I was hooked straight away.
“I haven’t had the most consistent of times recently so I’m just looking forward to getting my head down and working hard to help take the club to where they want to be.
“Since the interest came about I’ve been keeping an eye on the club, and the success of last season is exciting.
“The club’s been in the public eye a lot this summer with the Will Grigg stuff as well, and I’ve been singing it all summer.”
Discussing his fellow summer signings, Burn continued:
“I don’t know any of the lads personally, but I’ve played against most of them before so I know it’s a good squad.
“Stephen Warnock’s been brought in and that will be massive for the team next season with his experience.
“Alex Gilbey’s also arrived, I haven’t seen much of him but from everyone I’ve spoken to he’s going to be a great player, so I think everyone is optimistic here at the moment.”
The defender also commented on how the experience in Latics’ current defence and backroom staff encouraged his decision to join the club.
“Another thing about signing here is that the manager was a very experienced centre half and a great defender in his day, so I want to learn.
“I’m 24, but I still think I can improve massively and I don’t think I’m getting close to my potential just yet so it will be good to learn off the gaffer and the likes of Craig Morgan and Jason Pearce.
“I’ve played against both of them a few times before and against Donervon Daniels when he was at Blackpool, so I know there’s good competition in my position and hopefully we can push each other along.”
On his own game, Burn explained:
“I feel as though I’m strong in the air and quite a physical player. Being tall and slim I think people look at me as an old fashioned centre half, but I like to play with the ball on the floor as well and from what I’ve seen of the lads last season they’re a big footballing team.
“From what the gaffer has told me that’s the philosophy here.”
