Morris 8

Latics dropped to fifth place in the Final Third Development League West this afternoon after they dropped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Bradford City at the Coral Windows Stadium, following an eighth minute goal from Josh Morris.

The midfielder, who was one of four with first team experience for Bradford alongside Billy Knott, Paul Anderson and Greg Leigh, picked up on a mistake at the back to score from 25 yards, with the strike extending Latics' winless run to three games.

It was actually a bright start from Latics, and less than a minute before the telling goal, striker Sam Cosgrove smashed a 25-yard volley off the cross bar.

Latics' mix up at the back moments later eventual cost them the game, goalkeeper Owen Evans chested the ball down but failing to clear a back pass, allowing Reece Webb-Foster to close him down and release the ball to Morris.  The midfielder remained composed from distance to strike into the centre of the goal for 1-0.

Morris and Evans round two came a couple of minutes after the opener, but this time the Wales youth international held the Bradford man's powerful free kick from range.

The half itself was end-to-end but with very few chances as play continually broke down in the final thirds.

Alex Lingard struck a similar free kick to Morris' earlier in the half, but Joe Cracknell was equal to it.

Latics were forced into a change at the break, with Arnie Baxendale replaced by Sam Stubbs after the full back failed to recover fully from a clash of heads with Leigh earlier in the first half.

Second half proceedings failed to throw up many genuine chances for either side, although Matty Hamilton did strike the cross bar direct from a corner as he swung the ball in right footed.

The two key chances fell in the final three minutes, the first for Bradford who thought they were through on goal with substitute Dylan Mottley-Henry, but Stubbs stepped across him, using his strength to prevent a clear shot on goal.

With one minute remaining, Cosgrove bullied his way down the left and shot from a narrow angle forcing a parried save from Cracknell.  The ball eventually fell to James Barrigan outside the box, but his left footed volley flew over the bar.  No way through for Latics.
