Gary dedicates February accolade to staff and players.

  • Gary Caldwell named February Manager of the Month.
  • Staff and players praised for Sky Bet League One award.
  • Three wins and one draw for Latics in February.
After a month which saw Wigan Athletic win three and draw one, conceding just once and rising into the automatic promotion places, Latics’ boss Gary Caldwell has been named Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for February.

Caldwell’s side scored seven and conceded just one over the four game period, winning 2-0 away at Sheffield United and drawing 0-0 at home against Oldham Athletic, before recording back-to-back wins 2-1 away at Walsall and 3-0 at home against Bury.

“It’s nice to receive awards like this,” Caldwell said.

“I was fortunate enough to receive personal awards as a player, but looking back at my career none of them come close to the team awards that I won, in terms of winning trophies and leagues.

“It’s great to be named Manager of the Month, but this award is for all of the staff, they work incredibly hard and they provide me with great support for this job.

“To me this is recognition of all of the work we’ve done as a collective over the past month, but it’s also for the players because they’re the ones who go out and perform and get the results.”

Looking back on the results Latics picked up, Caldwell said the quality of opposition faced was the major positive from the month.

“When you consider the teams we played in February, that’s the most pleasing aspect.

“It was a big month, we knew going into it that we were facing tough opposition, so to come out of it with three wins and a draw was impressive.

“That’s down to the players and their hard work and ability to perform on a Saturday and get those results.”
