Latics stars join in with Community Trust Schools Sports programme.

Chris McCann and Max Power joined in with St Ambrose Barlow Primary School’s football team for the afternoon earlier this week, taking part in their weekly coaching session that is provided by Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

Chris and Max joined in with passing and shooting drills with the team, before playing in a five-a-side match, where Chris’ team came out on top as 3-2 winners.

There were some great celebrations on show whenever a goal went in, including some re-enactments of Max Power’s ‘bouncy tigger’!

Max said: “I haven’t seen the celebration for a while so it was nice to see the kids copying it, that’s really what we’re here for - to inspire them.

“The coaching session was loads of fun, the kids enjoyed themselves and there were some great players amongst them as well.”

Cameron and Matt, Year 6 students at St Ambrose Barlow, said: “We’ve loved the players coming down, we enjoyed training with them and we all had lots of fun - including Max and Chris!

“The sessions that the Community Trust run for us are really good, we like having Wigan Athletic coming into the school and feel really lucky to get to work with them because they’re a professional football club from around here and the coaching is always loads of fun.”

The coaching session was provided as part of Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s School Sports programme, which the Trust have delivered in St Ambrose Barlow Primary School, Astley, since 2012.

St Ambrose Barlow Head Teacher, Darren McCann, said: “The players coming down was a fantastic opportunity for our children. We’re always looking to give them ‘wow’ moments and experiences that they’ll always remember. The players were great with them too, really approachable and they really got onto their level.

“Wigan Athletic Community Trust do a wonderful job with us, we have a really strong relationship with them and to have moments like this just makes what is already a good programme even better.”

The Schools Sports programme offers high quality PE lessons and lesson support to teachers, providing 140 coaching sessions in 26 primary schools across Wigan every week, with support from the Premier League.
