The Ormskirk-born 34-year-old defender has amassed over 400 games in a career which started at Liverpool where he played 68 times and won winners medals in the FA Cup, the Super Cup and the Champions League.
His career went on to include time at Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City and Coventry City, and he has won two full England caps.
He was a regular under Paul Clement at Derby this season, notching 20 league games, but has found himself out of the picture since the arrival of Darren Wassall in early February.
Latics manager Gary Caldwell is pleased with the latest arrival. He said:
“We are struggling a little on the left side of defence with Chris McCann now suspended for two games, we don't know the time scale on Reece James yet and the opportunity to bring in a player with his quality and experience is a great signing for the rest of season. When we found out Stephen was available it really was a no brainer.
“He has vast experience having played extensively at the very top level, but he also has great Football League experience in recent years and I think he will really help the squad at a vital time of the season.”
Warnock will wear the Number 22 shirt for Latics.
