Latics secured runners-up spot in the Final Third Development League West in style this afternoon, hitting a young Morecambe side into double figures with a 10-0 victory at Christopher Park, thanks to hat-tricks from Sam Cosgrove and Louis Robles, alongside goals from James Barrigan, Josh Gregory, Matty Hamilton and Danny O'Brien.
The stunning scoreline leapfrogged Latics above both Shrewsbury Town and Walsall in the table to finish behind eventual winners Bradford City, with the victory seeing Latics score a total of 27 goals in their final four fixtures of the season, with today's result bettering the 8-1 win against Burton Albion and the 7-1 victory in the away fixture against the Shrimps.
Latics had a strong core of Development Squad players in their ranks, along with six from the current Under 18 squad and a debut for goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe.
The powerful front line of Robles and Cosgrove was evident from the very start and within the opening five minutes they had already began to disrupt the Morecambe defence, which meant the opening goal in the eighth minute came as no real surprise.
Alex Lingard was the provider, darting down the touchline to whip in a pin-point cross for Cosgrove who rose high to thump a header home from close range.
Two minutes later Cosgrove grabbed his second, showing his strength to barge through down the right side of the box from O'Brien's pass, before shifting the ball quickly between his feet to slot the ball underneath the keeper.
Less than 60 seconds after the restart Robles had the ball in the net, but it was premature for the start of his goal scoring as the linesman's flag judged him offside.
Robles then saw another attempt denied when his quick turn and shot in the box was tipped wide for a corner, and the striker probably thought it wasn't his day when he broke through one-on-one and was seemingly held back in the box. No penalty said the referee.
His goal came inside the 16th minute, with O'Brien assisting for the second time down the right side, pulling the ball back across the box for Robles to tap home.
Latics were relentless in attack, allowing Robles to score his second of the game. Cosgrove's tenacity and power proved crucial in the move as he robbed the right full back of the ball, before rounding the keeper and pulling the ball back for Robles to simply follow in.
A fifth came shortly after the half an hour mark when Barrigan got in on the act to smartly finish inside the area from Cosgrove's flick on.
Morecambe were hit for six four minutes later with arguably the best finish of the match, when Lingard claimed his second assist, stretching to keep the ball in on the right touchline before heading inside and sliding a pass outside the area for Gregory to run onto, with the midfielder whipping his shot into the bottom right corner.
Latics were 7-0 up by half time with the first hat-trick of the game completed by Robles, and a hat-trick of assists chalked up for O'Brien with the wide man sending in another teasing cross for his striker to head home.
Peter Atherton made two changes at half time with Matty Taylor and James Boyd replacing Luke Burke and Gregory, with Luke Burgess also joining the action shortly after, but not before Latics had put in their eighth.
This time it was Cosgrove completing his hat-trick and doing so in typically bullish fashion, barging his way down the left side from almost the half way line before cutting onto his right foot to finish into the bottom right corner.
Lavercombe had to remain on his toes in his first Latics appearance at the other end when a fierce close range effort forced him to tip over just after the hour mark, but it was a rare act for the young goalkeeper.
Robles rippled the side netting and was then replaced by Callum Lang before Latics hit their ninth, reaching double figures inside the last four minutes with two quick-fire goals.
First, O'Brien collected his fourth assist of the afternoon when he clipped in a cross to the near post for captain Hamilton to nod home, before the games biggest architect then bustled his way through the defence and beat the keeper to a loose ball for Latics' 10th of the game.
