The 18-year-old has featured 27 times for the Under 18s this season, scoring three goals and leading his side into a historic 1-0 victory over Derby County in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, before captaining the team in Latics’ first ever fifth round appearance against Manchester City.
Versatile in the defensive line, Burke has featured across the back four throughout the season, making the step up into the Development Squad with a total of 18 appearances, whilst also earning a place in the match day squad with the first team, and as an unused substitute in Latics’ Capital One Cup clash with Bury at the DW Stadium.
Burke was presented with his award by Head of Academy, Gregor Rioch, who said that the defender is a great example of the work being carried out within the Academy structure.
“Luke has been an absolute credit to himself, his team mates and the football club.
“He has really progressed this season and continues to do so, representing the club as our captain in the Under 18s, moving into the Development Squad and earning himself the opportunity to be in and around the first team.
“Luke’s a very bright prospect for the future and we look forward to welcoming into the Development Squad full time next season after he was offered his first professional contract earlier this year.”
The award is named in honour of Michael Millett, a home-grown England Youth International who tragically lost his life aged just 18 in 1995, having just broken into the Wigan Athletic first team.
