Latics secured a vital victory in their fight to claim the Youth Alliance title on Saturday, with an impressive 2-0 victory away at third place Walsall ensuring one more win would crown them champions at the expense of current leaders Bury.
Captain Luke Burke and trialist James Boyd were on target in each half to provide the advantage, as Latics also kept their 21st clean sheet of the season.
Burke's opener in the 36th minute was a clear example of Latics' determination to succeed, when Alex Lingard's corner was turned back across goal from Chris Sang's overhead kick, with Latics' skipper following in the loose ball from close range.
If the first goal was representative of Latics' attitude, the second was a sign of the quality possessed within the squad. James Barrigan forced his way down the left side before pulling back his cross to Boyd on the edge of the area, allowing the midfielder to shift the ball onto his left foot and loop his effort into the top corner.
Latics now head into their final game of the season away to Rochdale at Radcliffe Borough on Saturday knowing that a victory will see them lift the Youth Alliance title, a draw not being good enough due to Bury's superior goal difference after they defeated Fleetwood Town 6-0 at the weekend.
