Golden Boot winner Grigg scoops April Player of the Month.
- Will Grigg wins Player of the Month award for April.
- Striker claims Sky Bet League 1 accolade.
- Grigg scored seven goals in six games during the month.
The 24-year-old grabbed braces against Shrewsbury Town and Southend United as well as a match winning goal against Coventry City at the DW Stadium, his first half goal at Doncaster Rovers and Latics' fourth in the 4-0 promotion clinching victory against Blackpool last weekend.
On receiving the award, Latics' 2016 Golden Boot winner said: “It’s been a brilliant season for us. I spoke to the manager and the chairman at the start of the season and the vision they had for the club was exactly what I was looking for.
“It took a little bit of time to gel with my new teammates but the last six months have been brilliant. It’s been a season to remember.”
Sky Sports’ Football League pundit Don Goodman said: “To follow up last month’s four goals with another seven this month is an amazing achievement and has earned Wigan Athletic promotion to the Championship.”
Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “Wigan have ended up blowing away the competition in League 1 this year and their +40 goal difference is a testament to that.
“We made Grigg 14/1 to top the goal scoring charts at the start of the season which had him at the head of the betting and he hasn’t disappointed.
“He has knocked in 24 of Wigan’s 81 so far and should finish the season as the leading scorer in the division.
“He was helped by a haul of seven goals in April which indicate why he is a worthy winner of April’s Player of the Month award.”
