Latics’ evergreen midfield dynamo David Perkins has won the League One Player of the Year award at this year’s MBNA North West Football Awards, in recognition of his fabulous season for Wigan Athletic in winning Sky Bet League One.
The 33-year-old was a virtual ever-present last season, only missing one game through suspension, and was one of the real heartbeats of the team, as was recognised at the club’s own Player of The Year awards, where he won Supporters’ Player of The Year, Players’ Player of The Year and Away Player of the Year - as voted by supporters on the official team coaches.
Perkins was at the awards ceremony to collect his award, having been nominated alongside other finalists Tom Aldred of Blackpool, Peter Clarke of Bury and Jimmy Ryan of Fleetwood Town.
In typically modest fashion, he said: “I’m happy to get the award and it was a great season for the club, but our success was all about the team.”
Latics Chairman David Sharpe was also at the awards ceremony and said: “David was one of the most consistent players in the whole division and this is just reward for a top professional, who is a credit to football and a credit to our club.”
Perkins wasn't the only Latics success story on the evening as club volunteer Frank Melling won the Unsung Hero Award and Wigan Athletic Community Trust's Pathway 2 Participation won the Initiative of the Year award.
