Latics players and staff will be in attendance this coming Thursday, November 24th, to witness the unveiling of the Dave Whelan statue outside the DW Stadium.
The event is being held on Mr Whelan’s 80th birthday and, as well as the man himself, his grandson and chairman David Sharpe plus all of the Whelan family, it can now be confirmed that the Wigan Athletic players, manager Warren Joyce and his staff will also be present for the occasion – with supporters also being invited to attend the free event.
The one and a half times life size statue will depict Mr Whelan parading the FA Cup on the Wembley turf following our victory in the FA Cup Final on May 11 2013, and will stand seven feet four inches tall upon a three foot sandstone plinth.
It can now also be confirmed that FA Cup winning manager Roberto Martinez and captain Emmerson Boyce will also be in attendance at the unveiling
Latics Chairman David Sharpe said: “The statue is a tribute to the work my grandfather has put in to the club over the past twenty one years and it is only right that the club comes together on this occasion - players, staff and supporters - to celebrate a unique moment.”
The grand unveiling is a free event open to the general public. Supporters are urged to arrive by 1.30pm, with speeches and a live brass band before the actual unveiling by Mr Whelan himself takes place around 2.00pm.
