Wigan Athletic U18s have been handed an away trip to either Milton Keynes Dons or Exeter City in the Third Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup.

Nick Chadwick’s side will have to wait for the Dons and the Grecians to play out their Second Round Proper tie at St. James’ Park on Friday 18th November (7pm kick-off) before they will find out their opponents for their first game in the competition since last season’s thrilling tie with Manchester City at the DW Stadium.

2015-16’s crop of youngsters went on a club-record run to the Fifth Round of the FA Youth Cup as they defeated York City, Lincoln City, Stevenage and Derby County – the latter at the DW Stadium – before bowing out in extra-time to Category One side Manchester City.

The tie will be played at the home stadium of either MK Dons or Exeter City, depending on who wins their tie, and further match details will be released in the week commencing Monday 21st November 2016.

Academy manager Gregor Rioch is hoping the club can create a similar excitement to last season by progressing to the latter stages of the competition, he said:

"Last season's record-breaking run was fantastic for the academy as a whole and naturally the attention drew from the run is spurring everyone on to replicate it this time around.

"We entered the competition earlier last season and enjoyed those early round games but, following the first team's promotion to the Championship, we're now coming in at the third round stage again and will face a tough tie at either St. James' Park or Stadium:mk.

"Everyone is looking forward to seeing how the run unfolds and the preparations will continue alongside our current fixture programme to ensure we're best prepared for the game when it comes around."
