LOAN REPORT: FOUR TEAMS PROGRESS IN THE CHECKATRADE TROPHY

10 November 2016

Whitehead and Mckay taste victory as Hendry and Colclough progress despite defeat.

  • Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale and MK Dons all progress in the Checkatrade Trophy.
  • Danny Whithead and Billy Mckay feature in victories for their teams.
  • Jack Hendry and MK Dons suffer defeat but still make it through the group stage.

Danny Whitehead & Andrew Taylor

It was a clash of two loan teams on Tuesday evening, with Sky Bet League Two Cheltenham Town and Danny Whitehead coming out on top with a late Amari Morgan-Smith goal to seal a vital 1-0 victory over Andrew Taylor's Bolton Wanderers.

The victory sealed the Robins top spot in Northern Group A of the Checkatrade Trophy with six points, as Whitehead appeared as a late substitute in the build-up to the winning goal.

Taylor's Trotters were eliminated at the bottom of the group with three points.  The defender was an unused substitute for their final fixture in the competition.

Cheltenham will host Leicester City Under 21s in round two following the draw made on Thursday 10 November.

Billy Mckay

Oldham Athletic also progressed to round two of the Checkatrade Trophy, with Billy Mckay playing an important role in the penalty shootout that followed a 2-2 draw over 90 minutes, as the striker scored during the 5-4 spot kick victory over Blackburn Rovers Under 21s.

The hosts Rovers had themselves ahead twice during the 90 minutes through Anthony Stokes and Liam Trotter, but the Latics pegged them back twice, first through Freddie Ladapo, before Brian Wilson's 67th minute goal took it to penalties.

With an extra point up for grabs Mckay's side edged the resulting shootout to finish second in Northern Group D on five points.

Oldham will travel to Walsall in round two.

Jack Hendry & Ryan Colclough

MK Dons suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Norwich City Under 21s on Tuesday evening, but despite a final fixture loss in the Checkatrade Trophy, their five-point haul was enough to see them into the second round.

Jack Hendry started in the centre of the Dons' defence, receiving a yellow card in the 37th minute before being substituted in the 76th.  Ryan Colclough wasn't involved in the match day squad.

The Canaries took the lead in just the 11th minute through Carlton Morris, before Nelson Oliveira's double had them 3-0 up just after the hour mark.  MK substitute Finn Tapp pulled a goal back with six minutes remaining, before Ebou Adams restored Norwich's three-goal lead just three minutes later.

MK Dons will travel to Yeovil Town in round two.

Sanmi Odelusi

Rochdale progressed into round two of the Checkatrade Trophy with a 2-1 victory away to Hartlepool United on Wednesday evening, rounding off their group stage campaign with a win to finish top of Northern Group F on eight points.

Sanmi Odelusi wasn't involved in the match day squad, as Reuben Noble-Lazarus and Matthew Gillam grabbed a goal each either side of half time to earn the three points despite Rhys Oates' late goal.

Dale will now host Chesterfield in round two.
