Latics bounced straight back to winning ways on Saturday with a confident 3-1 victory over Port Vale following last weekend's 3-2 defeat at Fleetwood Town, thanks to goals from Callum Lang, Youth Alliance top goal scorer Tom Powell and Matty Taylor.

Victory at Christopher Park lifted Latics up to ninth in the league table, but the win provides a much appreciated boost ahead of their Youth Alliance Cup quarter final clash with Burton Albion.

Lang and Powell had Latics well ahead in the opening stages against the Valiants, but were made to kick on and get a third through Taylor after Mike Calverley pulled a goal back for the visitors shortly after half time.

Nick Chadwick's side asserted themselves comfortably in the contest, restricting Port Vale and coming out on top in the vast majority of the physical battles they were challenged with.

Latics highlighted their ability to play out from defence in good spells, none more so than for the opening goal inside 12 minutes.

Right back Tylor Golden created the move, arching a pass down the wing for Powell who in turn beat the goalkeeper and squared a pass for Lang to finish from six yards.

Powell got in on the act himself eight minutes later to add his eighth in the league this season, beating his marker from a corner kick to poke in Shane Donaghey's corner from close range.

The Valiants response had to wait until after the break, but Calverley did so with determination as he beat Tom Hilton to the ball in the box, heading across goal to beat Theo Roberts.

Taylor made sure of the points with 20 minutes remaining to restore Latics' two-goal advantage by finishing Josh Beaumont's goal-bound effort from another Donaghey corner, with the left back making sure his team mate's attempt definitely found the net.

Latics: Roberts, Golden, White, Hilton, Beaumont, Taylor, Downey, Donaghey (Weir 87), Randell (Malumo 84), Lang, Powell
