Wigan Athletic's Community Trust sponsored Dave's award

Dave Grundy of Wigan and Leigh Wrestling Club was the winner of this year’s Volunteer of the Year award at the Believe Sports Awards held at the DW Stadium. The event was organised by Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and Dave’s award was sponsored by Wigan Athletic’s Community Trust.

Dave volunteers five nights a week at Wigan and Leigh Wrestling Club, and coaches youngsters from from as little as three years of age to adults. An encouraging individual, Dave travels the country to support each youngster when competing, and even drives them there in the mini-bus.

His work has also been recognised by the wider community, as he coaches local rugby teams, and runs sessions to help youngsters who attend special needs schools, which enables them to try new sports and build their self-confidence.

Wes Partington, Sport and Cohesion Manager at Wigan Athletic Community Trust, and a judge at the awards, said: “Dave’s passion, enthusiasm and commitment is unbelievable, and he was a worthy winner of this award. He gives so much back to the young people in our local community, and is a real inspiration to many.”

Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles is a social enterprise and charitable trust working in Wigan, who aim to provide the very best in leisure and culture, creating opportunities for people to change their lives, investing in facilities and adding value for public benefit. They work on behalf of local authorities delivering a wide range of leisure and cultural services.

The Believe Sports Awards is an event that rewards and recognises the work of voluntary sector coaches, clubs and volunteers, as well as celebrating the achievements of local athletes. Dave will now move forward to the Greater Manchester Sports Awards on Friday 4th November 2016.
