Latics all but booked their place in the first knockout round of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Oldham Athletic seeing them to the top of group seven, thanks to goals from Charlie Forecast, Matthew Taylor and Callum Lang.

After falling behind early on, captain Forecast pulled his side level before the break, with Taylor pushing Latics ahead in the final 10 minutes before Lang finished off the visitors in the fifth minute of injury time.

The victory means Latics are now unbeaten in five matches in all competitions, but more importantly for Nick Chadwick's players, they're now within touching distance of qualification from the group as winners, three points and four goals ahead of second place Tranmere Rovers who still have one game to play.

Latics suffered an early set back in a physical contest which saw a loose pass from Tom Hilton to his goalkeeper Theo Roberts intercepted and finished with ease.

The mistake only saw Latics grow stronger though, fending off the direct and battling style of Oldham's forwards, whilst creating good opportunities to pull level.

Latics' style created an open game, and one that always looked to be heading in the right direction following Forecast's equaliser three minutes before the break.

A low free kick into a crowded area saw the defender latch onto the ball for a powerful finish, a springboard for a strong second half display.

It took until the 84th minute for Latics to finally break through, a move which Taylor started and finished.

The left sided defender intercepted the ball inside his own half to counter attack almost three quarters of the pitch before finding striker Tom Powell, his cross inside for Lang saw the forward hit the post, before Taylor kept alive to follow in the loose ball for 2-1.

A third followed to seal the points, but again there was a wait for Latics, as Lang beat four players before cutting inside and driving the ball low into the bottom left corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Latics: Roberts, Plant, Taylor, Hilton, Forecast, Donaghey, Downey, Lang (Golden 90+7), Malumo (Powell 66), Randell (White 61), McGuffie
