Latics' Under 18s made it three matches unbeaten in the EFL Youth Alliance on Saturday thanks to a Mwiya Malumo double and one from leading goal scorer Tom Powell to overturn an early George Harry opener for the visitors at Christopher Park.

Nick Chadwick's side collected their first league victory of the season as their fortunes begin to turn following a tough start, with Malumo and Powell leading the line to take their chances well in the second half.

Latics were also given a much needed boost on the injury front as Callum Lang became the first of a number of players to return from the sidelines as a second half substitute, with more hoping to follow in the coming weeks.

Despite some encouraging football in the first half, Latics were dealt an early set back when a clearance from Charlie Forecast fell straight to a Wrexham attacker, with Latics' left side unable to deal with the danger, allowing Harry to turn, shoot and score in the area.

Forecast and his defensive colleagues managed to rally from the early goal though, with the defender making a number of telling blocks to keep the score at 0-1.

The second half also proved tricky at times when Wrexham began to test Latics with longer passes and set plays, but Chadwick's side began to create more and took their chances perfectly.

Malumo was first up on the score sheet when he turned in the rebound from Powell's 20-yard effort after Anthony Plant had regained possession on the half way line, with the goal scorer in the perfect position to slot home from the keeper's parry.

First year apprentice Malumo then doubled his tally on the day with 15 minutes remaining when he rose highest from a corner to head home for 2-1 as the referee judged the ball to have just about crossed the goal line.

As Latics looked to see out the remaining minutes towards their first league victory of the season, leading scorer Powell made absolutely sure of it and settled any nerves when substituted Lang chipped Theo Roberts' clearance over the defence for Powell to finish coolly.

Lang had already made prior impact when he was introduced midway through the half, hitting the post with his very first touch back from injury, his second telling moment proved vital for Powell to claim his eighth of the season.
