GARY CALDWELL’S LATICS V WOLVES PREVIEW

26 September 2016

Boss discusses tactics, team news, Wolves and being back under the lights at the DW Stadium in pre-match press conference.

  • Caldwell remains confident tactical approach will pay dividends.
  • Positive news on midfielder Shaun MacDonald, who picked up injury against Preston.
  • Boss able to complete double scouting mission on Saturday at Wolves’ game with Brentford.
GARY ON MOOD AROUND THE PLACE AFTER FRIDAY EVENING’S DEFEAT…

“We have been eager to get back out on the pitch and put right what has gone wrong over the last few games in terms of the results.

“The atmosphere is great; the players are still buoyed by how they’re playing but they do know they need to do something about it in terms of results.”

GARY ON POTENTIAL TACTICAL CHANGES…

“I have to take myself out of the emotion of the game; I understand that the fans are very emotional and care about the club, I do as well and as do the players and staff.

“I have to look at the game in a different way, though, and think how we are going to get results.

“Last year we had a similar period at the start of the season and just before Christmas and we maintained a belief in what we are doing and it brought us success, and this year I see no difference to that.

“I still believe that with the way we play and the way we pass the ball that if we keep doing that, keep believing in that and get different things right - I think we need to get more players in the box, more crosses, and the players know that – then once we get that right, I am sure results will come and they won’t come in a one or two-game period, it will be like last year over a number of games in terms of unbeaten runs like those last season.”

GARY ON SHAUN MACDONALD INJURY SUFFERED AT PRESTON…

“Shaun MacDonald should be fine; he was carrying a dead leg going into the game and he did extremely well to play the time he did.

“I felt when he went off that we lost that stability at the back that we had with the two centre-backs and him. They coped really well with their two strikers and tactically they got it spot on, when he went off we did open up the game a little bit.

“He should be fine for Tuesday and it’s important that he is because he is a valuable part of our side.”

Shaun MacDonald will hopefully be fit for Tuesday's game.

GARY ON WOLVES TEST…

“It’s another difficult game; me and Adam Smith [Latics’ chief analyst] went to watch them against Brentford and they got another positive result so they’re in good form.

“They have good players in wide areas and they’re an organised team so we will have to be at our best if we want to win.

“I believe a win is around the corner; the players are eager to put it right and they had discussions yesterday amongst themselves to say we must change this quickly.

“It was great [to watch both Wolves and Latics’ opponents on Saturday Brentford]; I took my son down with me to Wolves v Brentford and then we went on to Aston Villa v Newcastle so we got a lot of football in on one day after he had a game in the morning as well.”

GARY ON BEING BACK UNDER THE LIGHTS AT THE DW…

“This club always comes out fighting in a time of crisis or in a time of need; the fans, the players, everyone rallies around and gets it right so I am looking forward to Tuesday.”
