Latics almost produced a memorable late comeback at Christopher Park on Saturday afternoon, but fell just short of a three-goal recovery as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Carlisle United, despite Tom Powell's second half double.
The visitors from Cumbria had a 2-0 lead at half time thanks to goal from Max Cowburn and Cameron Salkeld, before Cowburn added his second of the game with 21 minutes to play. Powell's eye for goal part-recovered the deficit, but after his second, a cool finish from the penalty spot, Latics couldn't find their way through to earn a point.
Latics put in a dominant performance overall, but were left ruing their own mistakes, two of which led to a Carlisle double in the space of just five first half minutes.
Cowburn's opener came a result of a free kick being given away on the edge of the area by Sam Stubbs, before Latics were caught on the counter when Tylor Golden was dispossessed, allowing Salkeld to finish tidily from the edge of the area.
Cowburn's second came from another error, this time seeing him lob goalkeeper Theo Roberts from the best part of 40 yards.
Latics' general authority on the game did almost pay off though, Powell first pulling his side back into the contest by heading home on the end of Matty Taylor's cross inside the six yard box, before grabbing his second from the spot with eight minutes to play after Under 16 Charlie Jolley was tripped by the Carlisle goalkeeper.
Despite a late push to earn a hard-fought point, Nick Chadwick's side were left to use their mistakes to learn going forwards.
