Latics got their season up and running on Saturday in fine style with a thumping 4-0 victory over Fleetwood Town at Christopher Park to go top of their EFL Youth Alliance Cup group with one game remaining, thanks to Tom Powell's second half double, Tom Hilton and a Nathan Randell penalty.

It was a much needed boost for Nick Chadwick's side who had come close to victories in their previous two matches but were left with back-to-back goalless draws, something which certainly couldn't be said at the weekend, with all four goals coming in the second half.

The first half was a highly competitive contest with some neat and tidy passing from Latics, but it was the second half which saw them come into their own.

Dominance was the theme throughout, pinning Fleetwood into their own half for the vast majority of the 45 minutes after opening the scoring just nine minutes after the restart.

Hilton got off the mark by following in the rebound from his own shot from a corner, before nine minutes later Powell rounded off a fine move to double Latics' lead.

Sam Stubbs switched play from right to left, before Jack White latched onto the pass and darted up the wing to provide the cross for Powell to finish from six yards.

Stubbs was also involved in Latics' third when he was sent tumbling in the 66th minute from a corner, with Randell duly stepping up to convert from the penalty spot.

Powell's second of the afternoon shortly followed to put Latics 4-0 up going into the final 10 minutes, rounding off another good team move from close range to get on the end of Randell's cross.

Latics featured four Under 16 players during the 90 minutes, with McGuffie starting and Jolley, Banigime and B.Roberts appearing from the bench.

The victory puts Latics top of the group on four points with one game remaining against bottom side Oldham Athletic.
