- Academy Head, Gregor Rioch: “This is always a tough day.”
We are delighted to confirm that Wales Under 19 international goalkeeper Owen Evans, along with striker James Barrigan, have been offered 12-month contract extensions until the summer of 2018.
They join Luke Burke and Josh Gregory, who have already signed contract extensions until 2018.
Barrigan made his first team debut versus Oldham Athletic in the EFL Cup earlier this season, while Owen Evans has been in four match-day squads this campaign.
Seven Development Squad players will not be offered contracts.
They are striker Sam Cosgrove, midfielder James Boyd and defenders Arnie Baxendale, Adam Anson, Liam Langford and Alex Lingard.
Midfielder Danny O’Brien has already been released.
Gregor Rioch, Head of Wigan Athletic Academy, said: “This is always the most difficult day of the year for academy staff.
“The work that all the players have put in during the season has been exceptional and it was fitting that we won the EFL Central League Cup as a reward.
“However, decisions have to be made with the criteria that we are keeping players we feel have a chance of breaking into the first team squad.
“Congratulations to James and Owen, we will be working with them to continue their development and their dedication has been rewarded.
“For those who have not been offered contracts, we are genuinely disappointed. We will offer all the advice and help we can in terms of trying to find them another club, facilitate them in choosing another career or to move into further education. We have a duty of care to all our young players to support them in every way we can.”
