Wigan Athletic defender Dan Burn has been named the club’s PFA Community Champion of the Year for 2016/17.
Dan received the award from Head of Community Tom Flower at the club’s training ground last week, where he was recognised for his work in helping to inspire young people in Wigan over the past season.
Amongst the projects Dan has supported is the Premier League Primary Stars scheme, which uses the appeal of professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
Throughout the season, Latics’ first team players make weekly appearances to support Community Trust activities as well as welcoming regular visits to the club’s training ground.
Speaking after receiving his award, Dan said: “I’ve really enjoyed taking an active part in the community work of the club this season, and have loved meeting so many different people and making a difference to the lives of school pupils.
Dan helped to launch Primary Stars at St Luke’s Lowton Primary School in November 2016 before enjoying his second Primary Stars session with club captain Stephen Warnock at Garswood Primary School in February of this year.
Tom Flower, Head of Community, said: “The support the Community Trust receives from all first team players is excellent and helps us reinforce our message to young people around topics such as health, sport and education.
“The feedback from staff, teachers and young people about Dan was really positive, and he has been fantastic at every appearance he has attended.”
John Hudson, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at the PFA, said: “We believe players who make that extra effort and contribution during the season should be recognised for their support and involvement in the local community.
He added: “This award will hopefully raise awareness of the great contribution and importance many of our members attach to their role off the pitch. We would like to offer our congratulations to Dan for winning this season’s Community Champion Award.”
