Midfielder moves to Stadium MK on permanent deal
- Alex Gilbey moves to MK Dons on permanent deal.
- Gilbey made 20 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.
- “We wish Alex all the best,” Paul Cook
Latics midfielder Alex Gilbey has joined MK Dons for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old travelled South after training today to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms at Stadium MK.
Latics manager Paul Cook said: “Alex wants to play and that is understandable, but the reality at the moment is that he has had to be patient. A good offer came in for him and sometimes you have to make tough decisions, but decisions that are for the benefit of all parties. We wish him all the best.”
Gilbey joined Wigan Athletic from Colchester United in the summer of 2016 and scored on his debut in the opening Sky Bet Championship of 2016-17. However, his season was blighted by a serious knee sustained against Fulham eight games into his Latics career, which put him out for five months. He was then forced to miss the final few weeks of the season with a second knee injury after scoring a comeback goal against Rotherham United.
He has made two substitute appearances in Sky Bet League One this season and featured in all three cup games, scoring at Bloomfield Road in the Checkatrade Trophy this week.
