Wigan Athletic have signed free agent Gary Roberts on a season-long deal.
The 33-year-old was with Paul Cook at Portsmouth and Chesterfield, with an identical league record of 74 appearances and 14 goals during two seasons at each, and the Latics manager is well aware of the player’s qualities.
Having undergone a medical and put pen to paper on a season-long deal, Cook said: “Gary is a player I trust and who has proven himself at this level. He will make a significant contribution and I’m delighted to have him on board.”
Liverpool-born Roberts was part of the Anfield academy set up as a boy, then joined up with the Crewe Alexandra junior set up. He joined Accrington Stanley in 2005, helping them to gain promotion from the Conference in 2006 – with Cook as a team mate.
He enjoyed spells at Ipswich Town, Crewe Alexandra, Huddersfield Town and Swindon Town before reuniting with his former team mate at the Proact Stadium in 2013.
A right-sided midfielder with a quality touch, he has won four promotions in his career, was voted League Two Player of The Year in 2014 – and even scored a 70 yard goal for Swindon earlier in his career.
