Latics midfielder Josh Laurent has joined Bury on a season-long loan.
The 22-year-old has only featured in cup games this season, scoring in the win over Blackpool in the Carabao Cup, and Latics manager Paul Cook feels his development will be best suited if he can get experience elsewhere.
With still a year left on his contract after this season, Cook said: “Josh has done really well in pre-season and in the cup games he has played so far. We believe he’s got the ability to play at this level and we hope he gets game time with Lee (Clark) at Bury. We will monitor his progress over the coming months.”
A January 2017 deadline-day signing from Hartlepool United , Laurent is a former youth team player with Wycombe Wanderers who went on to professional terms with Queens Park Rangers, and after a loan spell at Braintree Town, he moved to Brentford.
At Griffin Park, Laurent played one first team game - a 4-0 EFL Cup defeat to Oxford United - before joining Newport County on loan, where he played three games before making a permanent move to Hartlepool in February 2016. During his spell at the Victoria Ground, he played 33 games and scored one goal.
