Under-18s lose EFL Youth Alliance Cup opener at Rotherha
- Report: Rotherham United U18 2 - 1 Wigan Athletic U18.
- Mwiya Malumo gets goal back for Latics.
- Losing start for Nick Chadwick's side in physical encounter.
Latics' under-18s lost their delayed season opener at Rotherham United on Saturday morning, with their EFL Youth Alliance Youth Cup campaign getting off to a losing start.
Nick Chadwick's side saw their match at Blackpool - their EFL Youth Alliance opener - called off last weekend and headed to Rotherham with the hope of starting the season on a high.
They fell behind after just 15 minutes, though, when Adam Long was beaten in the air by his Millers counterpart for 1-0.
Rotherham made it 2-0 early in the second-half with a close range finish after Tom Hilton's clearance had been cut out.
Latics got back into the game 15 minutes from time when Mwiya Malumo headed home from Joe Downey's corner.
Chadwick's side couldn't get back in the game, though, despite dominating possession throughout in a physical encounter. Victor Maffeo and Malumo both had chances to register more goals for Latics but it wasn't to be.
The under-18s next play competitively on Saturday when they travel to Walsall in the EFL Youth Alliance.
Latics: Perrin, Golden, Maffeo, Plant, Long (Hilton 19), McGuffie, Culshaw, Downey, Malumo, Cotter (Jolley 55), Baningime.
Subs: Roberts, Monoghan, Trialist.
