JOHN (JACKY) RYAN (1944-2017)

19 December 2017

Former Latics winger sadly passed away aged 73 last Thursday.

All at Wigan Athletic were saddened to learn of the passing of former Latics winger John (Jacky) Ryan on Thursday 14 December 2017.

John played for Latics between 1965 and 1967, making 135 appearances and scoring 12 goals.

John was signed by Player-Manager Allan Brown at the start of season 1965-66 from Tranmere Rovers and made his debut in a 2-1 Cheshire League win at Wrexham Reserves on Saturday 4 September 1965. His first goal came in a 4-0 win against Winsford Utd in the same month.

During John’s time at Springfield Park, he helped Latics to win many trophies including the Cheshire League Cup, Lancashire Junior Cup, Liverpool Non-League Senior Cup (2), Lancashire Floodlit Cup and the Northern Floodlit League and Cup.

In October 1967, he joined Luton Town where Allan Brown was Manager as the Hatters won the Fourth Division title that season.

John’s career also included spells with Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers, Notts County and Altrincham.

Our thoughts are with John’s family at this sad time.
